Peaches and Nectarines

The fruit of summer
Peaches are the most delicious, thirst-quenching and beneficial summer fruit because they are rich in vitamins and minerals. The peach tree (Prunus persica) is a member of the rose family and a subgroup of the stone fruit family, so called because its fruit is a stone fruit. The plant is a medium-sized tree, reaching a maximum height of 7-8 metres. It is customary to distinguish peaches from nectarines, fruits with hairy skin, and nectarines, also known as nectarines, which have smooth skin.

Harvesting

Up to 40-50 kg of fruit can be harvested from a peach tree in full production. Generally, harvesting is staggered and takes about two weeks. At least 3 passes are necessary. The fruit should be kept cool and harvested when ripe.

This is why the Ribotta Group markets varieties with different ripening times, in order to ensure a deferred harvest in as much time as possible. The approximate harvest period is between the beginning of July and the end of September.

Curiosities

The peach is originally from China and is said to have been introduced to Mediterranean Europe by Alexander the Great after his invasion of Persia.

In Japan the peach tree is considered a protector against evil forces and is associated with exorcisms.
